An ALCOHOL delivery truck was robbed of US$8 050 in broad daylight at a popular drinking spot in Mutare on Wednesday.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident, and said Mr Lockeswar Reed Yarraballi who is employed as financial analyst by Sahana Industries Limited was seated in the Hino delivery truck when the robbers struck.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said Mr Yarraballi and the truck driver, Mr Jacob Manyemhesa drove to Mutare on Tuesday to deliver whiskey using a Hino truck.
“Mr Yarraballi and his driver, Mr Jacob Manyemhesa, stopped at Manyati Bar, where they parked in front of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development provincial offices.
“When Mr Manyemhesa went to return empty beer bottles and buy sadza, an unknown car with four men pulled up behind the Hino truck.
“One of the men knocked on Mr Yarraballi’s window, but he refused to open it. One of the men opened the driver’s side door, and grabbed a blue satchel containing the cash, before speeding off with his accomplices in the gateway car,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
He said Mr Yarraballi was not injured during the incident.
A report was made at Mutare Central Police Station, and police officers were dispatched to attend the scene, but no arrests were made.
Investigations are in progress.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka declared the suspects fugitives from justice, and urged members of the public with information leading to their arrest to contact their nearest police station.
“The police would like to urge members of the public with information that could lead to the arrest of the fugitives to contact their nearest police station. Members of the public with any information to share in relation to the robbery should feel free to approach us so that we account for the suspects in this case,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
