ONE person died on the spot and six others were injured when a Toyota Wish collided with a Toyota Hilux near Munyarari Secondary School along the Mutare-Marange Highway.
The incident occurred on June 4 at around 8pm.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the accident happened when 23-year-old Emmerson Kaize was driving towards Marange with a passenger on board.
His vehicle, which was transporting groceries, was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota Hilux driven by 35-year-old Takesure Elton, with 10 passengers on board.
“Upon reaching the vicinity of Munyarari Secondary School, Kaize failed to dim his headlights, and Elton’s vehicle encroached on the opposite lane. Both drivers lost control of their vehicles, resulting in the Toyota Hilux overturning and landing on its roof, while the Toyota Wish remained upright,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
Clever Chari (40), who was a passenger in the Hilux, succumbed to head injuries at the scene. Six other passengers sustained multiple injuries and were rushed to Victoria Chitepo Hospital.
The matter was reported at ZRP Mutare Rural.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged the motoring public to exercise caution on the roads.
“We urge the public to exercise caution on our roads, particularly at night. Reducing speed and dimming headlights when approaching oncoming traffic can significantly reduce the risk of accidents,” he said.
